In the summer of 2014, DCTV held its annual meeting, and as part of its 25th Anniversary celebration, they conducted the YOUR DC Video Competition to discover the many talented video-makers in the city who have a creative and unique expression of how they see D.C. Washington native, Kayona Ebony Brown, took home 1st Place with her short, WINGMAN.
The short tells a story based in-part on her own life as the young, female owner of a struggling independent record company in Washington, DC, who like most single women, find navigating the DC dating scene to be quite daunting; however, despite these hindrances, still finds DC to be the perfect partner to help her bloom where she was planted.
Like the short video, Kayona is a struggling “artistic entrepreneur,” and has actually been developing her story for many years. She has written a book, spent over 2 years developing a scripted television show, and in November 2013, Brown designed and launched a self-contained crowd-sourcing site: (http://ofmusicandmen.info) to generate resources to help bring her idea to light; however, things were still slow going.

The DCTV competition came just in time, literally. After raising just $350 with her website (about .0001% of what she would need to produce her project), the writer/actor/director decided to put her skills to the test to submit.
DCTV YOUR DC called for a 5-minute short about the city’s impression; she knew this was the perfect platform for which to showcase her city in the unique way that she has always planned. So she called the best camera guy she knew, edited, colored and mixed audio herself, and this is her result—the 1st Place submission to the DCTV YOUR DC competition: http://ow.ly/xJYdN.
Winning the 1st place prize puts Brown a step closer to her goal. The station plans to share the winning videos with communities all over the city by airing them on DCTV’s cable channels!
