The artistic entrepreneur

The artistic entrepreneur

A DC girl

Hailing from our nation’s capital, Kayona Ebony Brown is a multi-hyphenate artist, whose journey began with the simple desire to tell stories. She started the best (and only) way she knew how–writing. After publishing her book, and getting overwhelmingly positive feedback, she knew she was on the right track. And so… she kept going, finding all kinds of ways to develop her storytelling ability.

She eventually whet her appetite for visual storytelling working on indie films, which led to directing music videos, which then led to her first short, Of Music & Men, for which she wore too many hats to name (even doing the web and graphic work for the project).

Kayona’s entrepreneurial spirit coupled with her artistic prowess are the tools with which she's building the foundation for her career. Through books, screenplays and other stories, acting and speaking, and using her creativity, she’s seeing a career in entertainment and beyond, where her talents will impact this and future generations.

The fastest-growing group of business owners in America is Black women. Those entrepreneurs have a story to tell. Kenya Shaw is here to tell that story.

Of Music and Men chronicles the journey of a single, young entrepreneur struggling to build an independent record label, while navigating the country’s worst city for bachelorettes and an unlikely place for music success: Washington, DC.

Of Music and Men is a multi-media franchise that includes literature, music, a short film... all for the eventual TV show! Ultimately, it will be best known as a successful scripted, half-hour drama/comedy program.

"This is a highly original and compelling half-hour. The script marries two timeless pursuits--career and love--in a way that feels unique and accessible... evoke(s) a contemporary SEX AND THE CITY, which serves the story. By setting it in Washington, DC, and specifically exploring the music world, the script introduces a fresh and interesting setting. Overall, a well-written pilot. This script would appeal to a young and engaged audience, and would program best on a cable or streaming network...
Worth consideration."

The Black List, reader feedback for the pilot script: October 2018
