“We are not human beings on a spiritual journey; we are spiritual beings on a human journey.”
Let’s think about that for a moment. Have you ever stopped and wondered what this is—this life we’re all moving through?
When I first heard this quote about 3 or 4 years ago, it really struck a chord with me. Not to get too existential, but I’ve always felt like I wasn’t from here, and by “here” I mean this space, this earth, this time. I’ve always felt like an alien moving and existing in a foreign land—witnessing and learning things that were little or no value to me—because where I’m from things like money and jewelry and other material things are not synonymous with pleasure and happiness and love.
But I guess living in this space, in this earth, in this time is just my human journey, and witnessing the power of money and all that is a part of it—a part of what I have to experience on this journey. Perhaps as a spirit one day I’ll have a tree experience or a cat experience. Who knows?
So think about it: as a spiritual being, what has this human journey been like for you? Have you stopped to take the time to notice and enjoy and embrace the other spirits around you? Or are you as guilty as I am of trudging through most of your days with your head down, only focusing on some task or goal or mission?
Today’s assignment: write down 4 things you would like to be remembered by when your human journey is over and you–as a spirit–move on to your next journey.
de Chardin was born in 1881 in France. He was a Jesuit Priest and a scientist whose focus was mostly paleontology geology, which is why he became very involved early on in the theory of evolution. He spent much of his time trying to integrate faith with science. He died in 1955 in New York City.
